The Gnat And Elephants

One day the gnat happily flying in search of food found a perfect landing spot with an unlimited food supply and a free ride; the elephant.  The landing spot was so big the gnat had to make a choice where to land.  If the gnat landed on foot survival might be a dream rather than a reality. If the gnat landed on the back then branches brushing could be the gnat’s demise.  If the gnat landed on the side then rubbings against the trees for itching could end the gnat’s visit.  The gnat had to think of its escape to safety if water were to wash over the elephant’s skin. The gnat was convinced how smart it was and made a choice to land.  The gnat did not think about unintended consequences.  The gnat did not consider that each feast was a bite that caused an itch needing attention; attention often detrimental to any gnat with the swipe of a tail or trunk.  The gnat made its choice convinced of its rightness and looked forward to fatting itself on the feast before it landed. The gnat knew nothing about elephants and saw no need to learn.  The gnat knew gnat business better than most other gnats. The gnat was smart, right and determined. The gnat was strong. The gnat did not survive long, why?  Can you think of any reasons why the small gnat business life was cut short?
