USA CHINA Myth 4: The Internet Will Topple The Party

The Internet Will Topple The Party

W rong, Wrong, Wrong!  The Party now controls most of the Internet in China. They also control their market. They have no desire to share their burgeoning market with others.  At 1.34 billion people and 5,000 years of cultural, governmental, and language history they want all that others have but in their way in their world.  Look at the technological counterparts in China growing and challenging the western supremacy on the Internet.   Much of what is happening in China is with the cooperation and assistance of the western companies who now dominate each sector; publicly and privately.  Most intelligent leaders push a program but always have an escape plan, second strategy, in case things go awry.  The western Internet leaders are not fools.  The Chinese social and economic leaders living with what is now a “black and white, two-colored cat” are no fools. Both will do what it takes, to the chagrin of many, to adjust the best they can to benefit (as they define it) from an unpredictable future with unknown consequences.  If the current superior technology leaders cannot win their way then they will compromise, adjust and join the Chinese path because the market and profits are more important than philosophical issues.  Look at what we have today. Is it because China copied us or did we help the Chinese build their way in a way that may lead to a global merger for market dominance?  Such might be outside the bounds of western anti-trust. Is it possible these are the “corporations larger than most countries” that will move their centers to whatever place on the globe is most beneficial to their monetary interests?  Adam Smith taught us they should do so. David Ricardo taught that they should do so.  If more profitable union pension funds, hedge funds, and shareholders want them to do so because that is the “western way”. Look at the saplings that are beginning to have stems, leaves and branches with fruit.

  • Dianping (YELP of China),
  • TaoBao (Ebay of China),
  • Toudou & Youku (YOUTUBE of China),
  • Dangdang (Amazon of China),
  • Sina Weibo (Twitter of China),
  • Hudong & Baidu Baike (Wikipedia of China),
  • Sina (WordPress blogging),
  • Ctrip (Expedia of China)

and the list goes on and on….

This is not about politics, philosophy or beliefs. It is about money, markets, control and access.  China has been holding back the west so their companies can thrive and grow beyond the “sapling stage” so as to be able to stand alone as viable producers in the harsh and challenging natural world of the future no one can predict. The westerners protect critical start-up industries and technology. They do so, Republics and Democracies, Dictators too, by tax subsidy and regulations, even with “Made in XXX” buying requirements. Much of what China is doing they learned from the westerners who seem to like their way when they benefit but scream harm and foul when others use their way for their own benefit.  The western practices, from colonial times,  have been of dominance for their benefit at the expense of others. Now others, those nobly helped by the west so much for so many (foreign aid and colonialism) are grown up and want an equal place at the table.  The west is not losing; they are getting old with a legacy of the economic past. Their progeny are growing up.  This is not a technology, a freedom or a “rights” game, this is a money game. China and the PRC, at least for the foreseeable future, will not be brought down by the Internet. They will learn and grow, use the Internet and then take our money like we now want to and have gotten theirs.  Get ready for global competition. The Internet will not topple the party.  The Internet will strengthen the party and the Chinese people. Like all trends facing all world leadership the Technological Revolution appears to be as big as or bigger than the Industrial revolution. It will bring benefits and consequences; locally, nationally and globally. Such will be in many different unknown and often unpredictable forms.  The leaders that choose wisely will succeed those who do not will fade away slowly, quickly or both.  The west seems to have problems finding a compromise for managing, accessing or using the Internet and data for the national safety, security and purposes due to the protection of a few individuals who may be harmed at the expense of all others. Chinese purposes are for the group over the individual.   This is not support or disagreement with either approach; it is a statement of the differences in thinking of each for both political and economic processes from different cultural perspectives.

The west is a country born in revolution that has blindly entered into the revolutionary foray and stylized the revolutionary process in voting (bloodless revolution), bankruptcy (fail and state over anew) and salvation (Christian hope and redemption for mistake and sin).  China’s history is one of evolution, change over time with some revolutionary periods, but for most of the 5,000 years of writing and society, non-revolutionary and swift loss of face for failure or mistakes as well as dire consequences.  Change is the only constant in mathematics and all human knowledge.  Each can choose evolution (quick change) or evolution (slow change) but change will prevail in both China and the west.  To criticize one or the other or expect them to think the same way is an unsupportable argument as both perspectives have benefits and costs.

Makemi thinks that both, western and Chinese as well as other nations, deserve respect and support and that bridge building across cultures, languages, economics and politics with mutual respect, appreciation, understanding one person to one person, one family to one family, one small business to one small business will benefit all as we all change, endure revolutions from within and without and evolve into the new world being imposed on us mortals by technology, geography, climate, rare-earth resources, ourselves and other factors both global and local.

In conclusion, it is Makemi’s opinion that the Internet will change China more than China will change the Internet.  It is Makemi’s opinion that the people of China will change China more than the people outside of China.  As long as the Chinese Communist Party (CPC/PRC) has the Mandate of Heaven, they will rule with or without the Internet.
